Radiation Therapy Technology
Radiation therapy is one of the ways patients are treated for therapeutic purposes.
As a Radiation Therapist, you administer the prescribed treatment, keep patient records,
and assist in a patient's care.
Radiation Therapy, like many careers in the medical field, pays well, is in demand,
and offers students an opportunity to learn critical thinking skills, as well as
skills that they can use in their field of study, immediately, to help patients.
Radiation Therapists administer treatments to patients for therapeutic purposes as
prescribed by radiation oncologists. In addition to patient care, the radiation
therapist performs tumor localization, provides radiation protection and maintains
appropriate patient records.
El Paso Community College offers an associate degree in Radiation Therapy, which
combines classroom study with clinical practice in cancer treatment centers in the
community. The program is in the process of applying for accreditation with the
Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The successful graduate
is eligible to apply for certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Graduates may also qualify for certification by the Texas Department of Health Medical
Radiologic Technologist Program.
The Radiation Therapist is a key member of the cancer management team.
